Abu Dhabi- Masdar

Abu Dhabi : Masdar

What is Masdar?
Masdar is a city project where a city will be built that will be have zero carbon, zero waste, will be car free, have sustainable transport, recycling and waste management

What are the Aims of Masdar?

The aims are to save up to $2 billion over 23 years by not using oil, to keep within the Kyoto emission limit, add 2% to the Abu Dhabi annual GDP and to be the model for the future of sustainable energy.

Abu Dhabi - a cool city

Abu Dhabi a cool city

Coolest development: desert islands project

How green are the projects? The desert islands project is going to be a nature reserve with sustainable energy, protected breeding grounds and opportunities for education and tourism, so this project looks like a green project and the project near Zayed sports city is going to use recycled water and sustainable energy, but a lot of the other projects that are being made are for tourist purposes and although there are some green options that are going into them they are mostly money making projects.

Will these make Abu Dhabi a cool city or will there be problems?

While all the projects will make Abu Dhabi look nice and make it a good tourist destination; which will bring in money other than oil money I feel that the projects are not going to benefit normal people, these projects are aimed at the high middle class and wealthy people which are not the majority of people living in Abu Dhabi and the projects themselves are going to change the natural environment.

Cool Cities

Cool cities

10 ways to make a cleaner city.

1. Clean buses, busses that run on natural gas
2. Hybrid cars, cars that are cleaner and save $1,900 over 5 years
3. Energy efficient buildings, buildings that are made to better keep heat, cool and light, to save on energy etc
4. Energy efficient street lights save $32,000 per year
5. Combined heat and power units, have lower energy costs and less pollution
6. Use solar and wind power
7. Renewable energy standards
8. Using city utility contracts
9. Retrofit energy efficient technology to old buildings
10. Make new buildings more energy efficient

Are these realistic?

The ideas seen on the video are very realistic for the gulf, they are well planned and since there is so much development of new buildings in the UAE it would be easy to create the cool/green buildings that will save money and help the environment.

3 ideas than can work
1. Recycled cool air
2. Hybrid cars and public transport
3. Mechanical roof that will be closed in the hot weather and opened in the cool months

3 ideas that are not appropriate
1. Making things close to each other so people can walk will not be an option in the summer months it will still be to hot to walk
2. Open areas with mist machines only make the area 6 degrees cooler which in the summer is still not enough to allow people to walk and stand comfortable in open areas
3. Too much mist and water would be needed just to make a small change in the temperature
